What is a blockchain and why does it matter?

A blockchain is a shared record that securely tracks crypto transactions — without a bank in the middle.

A blockchain is a public digital ledger that records every crypto transaction.

Instead of one company controlling it, the ledger is maintained by a global network of computers.

Why that matters:

  • No single company controls your money
  • Transactions are recorded publicly
  • Records can’t be changed

This is what makes crypto decentralized. Unlike bank transfers, which rely on the bank to act as the middleman, crypto can move directly person to person.
