# What is a blockchain and why does it matter?
## A blockchain is a shared record that securely tracks crypto transactions - without a bank in the middle.
A **blockchain** is a public digital ledger that records every crypto transaction.
Instead of one company controlling it, the ledger is maintained by a **global network of computers**.
Why that matters:
- **No single company controls your money**
- **Transactions are recorded publicly**
- **Records can’t be changed**
This is what makes crypto decentralized. Unlike bank transfers, which rely on the bank to act as the middleman, crypto can move directly person to person.
